PITCAIRN ISLANDS 1944 CENSOR COVER via COOK ISLANDS TO USA
P I T C A I R N I S L A N D S. PITCAIRN ISLAND TO CALIFORNIA via COOK ISLANDS, NEW ZEALAND.

FIRST-EVER RECORDED CENSOR LABEL D. SCARCE CENSOR COVER - VERY FINE / EXCELLENT CONDITION. It was postmarked at Pitcairn on 28. The Censor opened the envelope at the left side, and resealed it with his Censor Label.

The reverse of the envelope has the remainder of the Censor label. On receipt, the envelope was opened at the base (slightly roughly), for the second time. This was the likely scenario, as during the whole of 1944, only 9 vessels called at Pitcairn coming from, or going to, the Panama Canal. The schooner also called at Pitcairn in July and November, 1945. From 1901 until 1965, when it attained Self-Government, the Cook Islands territory was a New Zealand Protectorate , and it is possible that D. /36 was located there, at Rarotonga. The Censor label is the OPENED BY EXAMINER - D. /36 label (Kitching type 16.3.2) ² , 47mm x 76mm in total size, extensively used in New Zealand during World War Two. It is affixed to the front left and back right side of the envelope. It is unrecorded for location "36". The Sender (Clark) & the Addresse e (Fitch) : In 1944, Roy Palmer Clark was Pitcairn Postmaster, and also an Elder of the Seventh Day Adventist Church on Pitcairn Island (address at top left). The addressee is Daniel D.

Fitch ("Uncle Dan"), an Elder and Leader of the Church in Glendale, California. Roy Clark's two-page letter, dated 27 August 1944 is recorded as being "from Roy to Uncle Dan" ³. This is the envelope that bore this letter to California. ¹ "Pitcairn - Port of Call" pp.
