This coin is part of an antique series well-known as The Norse Gods. The Norse Gods series originated from Germany's BH Mayer Mint consisting of nine coins that features legendary figures such as Odin, Thor, and Tyr. This coin graces Tyr, and is the third coin in the series, coming with a Certificate of Authenticity. Tyr is widely known as being the God of War and Victory, many Norse literature had the protagonists ask Tyr for victory before a battle. His true origin remains a mystery, most accept him as a son of Odin while some believe that he is the true father of the Gods.
One of his most defining attributes is his lack of a right hand and the story behind it. The Norse Gods came together to contain a powerful wolf known as Fenrir, but the beast had one condition. As a show of good faith, he requested that one of the deities place their hand in his mouth as they tried to magically bind him and Tyr volunteered showing his bravery and honor. Fenrir believed that he was strong enough to break the restaints but realizing the binding was too much, the beast took Tyr's hand as a last sign of struggle. The obverse of this coin features Tyr ready for battle, with sword and shield. He stands proudly ready to lead his army to victory and looking closely at his shield you can see that his right hand is missing. The inscriptions "NORSE GODS" and "TYR" are on the top and bottom of the coin respectively.
The coin's reverse depicts a right-sided profile of her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, along with the inscriptions "ELIZABETH II", "COOK ISLANDS" and "2015" encircling the rim of the coin.
