THE STORY OF SIX YEARS ON A DESERT ISLAND. This is felt to be the 1st Printing of the 1st Edition of this book issued in the Great Britain. Hardbound in good condition with dust jacket, 255 pages includes an CONTENTS, INTRODUCTION BY NOEL BARBER, AUTHOR'S NOTE, INTRODUCTION and POSTSCRIPT, measures approximately 5 ¾" x 8 ½". The jacket displays an image of Mr. Neale on his island on the cover and a photo on the rear panel.

The price is intact, but it is very worn, chipped with many tape repairs but in general still present on the most part. It has been placed in an Archival Quality clear Mylar jacket cover to better protect it in the future. The boards are covered in green cloth with titles blind stamped in gold on the spine only.

It is in very good condition but for the significant fading to the upper and lower area next to the edges. There is dusting of the page edges but only minimal wear to the board edges with straight boards, no bumps or splaying.

The interior reveals contents that are clean and still firmly bound, Moderate age toning is noted but no foxing. There is a small dedication in the upper free corner of the page opposite the half title page. There are no further ownership indications, no marks, creases or tears.

Tom Neale, a New Zealand citizen spent many years in the Pacific region and was greatly influenced by the enjoyment he found in the books of Robert Dean Frisbie. In 1952 he took advantage of an opportunity to take up residence on Suvarov in the Cook Islands, thereafter being the isolette's sole resident. It was his good fortune to make the acquaintance of Mr. Frisbie while on route after which he spend a total of six years in seclusion, recording his experiences and complimenting them with a number of photos, both color and b/w.

I was fifty when I went to live alone on Suvarov, after thirty years of roaming the Pacific, and in this story I will try to describe my feelings, try to put into words what was, for me, the most remarkable and worthwhile experience of my whole life. Tom Neale and James S. Ventured forth to follow the dream many a middle class working gentleman of the earlier 20th century. Not merely to cruise the tropic seas and then return home, but to take up residence and mold their own existence.

In the virtual footsteps of Robert Dean Frisbie, Tom Neal provides the details, the challenges, joys and dangers of such a dream. Quite a scare book in the United States some 45+ years after publication, it has become more and more sought after not just as a collectible piece but for it's practical knowledge as Suvarov (Suwarrow) has become one of the major atolls of interest for contemporary cruisers. Reprinted in the 1990s, this early edition copy of AN ISLAND TO ONESELF would make a wonderful addition to a Pacific Isle collection and a perfect companion to any of the Frisbie books.
