This beautifully designed entry in the series "Masterpieces of Art" pays tribute to the artist, generally considered the greatest Dutch painter after Rembrandt, though he had little success during his lifetime. Van Gogh's artistic style was fresh and astounding, with impressionistic bursts of color, rough brush strokes, and a focus on nature and simple topics like haystacks and sunflowers. An effigy of Queen Elizabeth II is represented on the obverse of the silver coin. There are also the inscriptions indicating the name of the Queen, the coin's face value and the name of the issuing country.
The reverse design features an image of a Vase with Twelve Sunflowers, from the famous "Sunflowers" series of paintings, shown in full color. Vincent van Gogh's Sunflower paintings have been duplicated many times by various artists (although never reaching the vivacity and intensity of Van Gogh's) and displayed everywhere: from households to art expos. Above the image, there is the inscription indicating the name of the series.
