Polynesian Cook Islands Adze Handle + Bookcirca 1870s/80s
Heres a nice old Polynesian (Cook Islands) Adze which was manufactured sometime in the decades of 1870/80s. This is the smaller brother version of the more sought after larger specimens. Still, these smaller adzes are wonderful in their own right and are highly collectibleThe purchaser of this nice specimen will receive a rare & FREE antique book titled Missionary Enterprises of the South Sea Islands by one Reverend. Its a great readand, on one of the books pages you will see a print of the older Cook Island (Mangia) adzes which he and his mission collected. Other of his interesting accounts (visits to other Islands, efforts to convert the natives, acquisition of tribal artifactsetcetc) and much, much more are all well depictedIncidentally, John Williams was killed and eaten by cannibals on the island of Erromango, Vanuatu in 1839!! Century books about voyages to far away distant insular lands are equally highly sought after by Tribal Arts enthusiasts. Just the usual wear and tear to be expected of a mid 19. Century book (circa 1845, in this case) and the usual foxing. A great & rare book!! And as for the Cook Is. Adze handle, well, the photos speak for themselves ; beautiful honey light brown color/ natural aged wood, nice mild patina.. Tight sennit binding on the handle's head, wonderful chipwork engraved geometric designs all along the body of the handleetc.. JUST SEE PHOTOSIts in very good condition, just some minor chips here and there and the accumulation of ages old dust within the crevices and numerous caverns. Has a collection inventory number on the underside. 17 inches long (43 cms). Pls dont ask if I can sell just the adze minus the book (for a lower price)I will not do that. A VERY NICE POLYNEISAN ARTIFACT (AND A NICE BOOK) WHICH COULD BE A GREAT ADDITION TO YOUR EVERGROWING POLYNESIAN/OCEANIC ART COLLECTION!
